THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF FILM & CULTURE - Patras city – Greece
12th International Panorama of Independent Film and Video Makers

                       1/10 - 9/10/2010

The key factor of a successful 12 year course of the International Film Festival of Patras, was the amalgamation between the creator, the spectacle and the spectator, the abolition of artificial segregation out of which the regime of over-indulgence of commercialism/fetishism, arises in all levels of life. Today, the desire for interactive arts therefore people's communication through the arts is as ever big, considering that only through the vividness and various ways of imagination can one break the spells of the awful normals and the chains of the social norms. Since our survival in the universal community and our affirmation of our humanity and dignity is of vital importance, we must enrich our common language, our most natural expression, art....

Under the umbrella of this new consequent standpoint, the International Film Festival of Patras is now broadening its action. It is being altered into Patras International Festival of Film & Culture, Greece and its activities are being expanded into a variety of arts such as theatre, photography, poetry and visual creation through the participation of an increasing number of individuals and organised communities of the city associated with arts and culture.

The entire attempt is based on a will to identify a more alternative meaning of the terms ‘art' and ‘culture'. If culture is the quest for these terms that apply to the cultivation of social sensitivity as well as the experimentation on alternative types of speech and action that give life to supressed ideas through various art forms, then it is obvious that the starting point of any kind of action couldn't be other than the challenge of the status quo which is responsible for the inertia, inboxing and ‘self-absorption' of the existing order. The somewhat passive acceptance and consumption of any kind of cultural artifact and the adherence to mechanisms that encourage petty ambitions, preserve nepotism and prize mediocrity are life lines that don't agree with the need for pure and free expression and communication. First locally and then globally, the cultural scenery is in need of a rejuvenated and redefined meaning of the terms ‘public actions', ‘public space' and ‘free time'. Nonetheless, co-existence and dialogue are the basic requirements for the establisment of a new personal and collective identity.

From that perspective, the Patras International Festival of Film & Culture, Greece will try to establish a trust relationship and a closer partnership with each and every individual or/and community that supports the above principles and would like to contribute to the creation of a reformed cultural scenery. The new concept will embrace interventions/actions that will bring out the deeper affairs or/and problems and deficits but at the same time emphasize the potential, alternative pathways and coordinations.

The broadening of the Festival's content, philosophy and cooperative members will be followed by the extension of its time duration. The Festival's wider objective is to become the natural meeting point of individuals and groups that will convey their ideas through various creative ways along with a time limit that they themselves will define.
